What Are Parts of Speech?
In English, every word belongs to a category called a part of speech. These categories tell us how a word functions in a sentence. Mastering the eight parts of speech is the first step toward understanding English grammar and expressing yourself clearly.
The eight parts of speech are: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. Each one plays a unique role, and many words can act as different parts of speech depending on how they are used.
Nouns
A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. Nouns are the building blocks of sentences — they tell us who or what we are talking about.
Common and Proper Nouns
- Common nouns refer to general things: city, dog, book, teacher.
- Proper nouns name specific people or places and are always capitalized: London, Albert Einstein, Toyota.
Countable and Uncountable Nouns
- Countable nouns can be counted and have plural forms: one apple, two apples, three chairs.
- Uncountable nouns cannot be counted individually: water, rice, information, music.
Pronouns
A pronoun replaces a noun to avoid repetition. Instead of saying "Maria" over and over, you can say "she."
Personal Pronouns
- Subject pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, they — She loves reading.
- Object pronouns: me, you, him, her, it, us, them — Give the book to her.
Possessive Pronouns
- Show ownership: mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, theirs — That bag is mine.
Reflexive Pronouns
- Refer back to the subject: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves — He taught himself to play guitar.
Verbs
A verb describes an action, occurrence, or state of being. Every sentence needs a verb.
Action Verbs
- Show physical or mental actions: run, eat, think, write, dance — She writes stories.
Linking Verbs
- Connect the subject to a description: be, seem, become, appear, feel, look — He is a doctor. The food smells great.
Auxiliary Verbs (Helping Verbs)
- Help the main verb form tenses, questions, and negatives: be, do, have, can, will, must, should — She is running. They have arrived.
Adjectives
An adjective describes or modifies a noun or pronoun. It tells us more about size, color, shape, quantity, or quality.
- a red car, three tall buildings, an interesting movie, a delicious meal
Order of Adjectives
When using multiple adjectives, English follows a specific order: opinion → size → age → shape → color → origin → material → purpose. For example: a beautiful small old round red Italian leather handbag.
Adverbs
An adverb modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb. It answers questions like how, when, where, and how often.
- How (Manner): quickly, softly, carefully — She sang beautifully.
- When (Time): now, soon, yesterday, later — We will leave soon.
- Where (Place): here, there, everywhere, inside — Come inside.
- How often (Frequency): always, never, sometimes, often — He always arrives on time.
Remember: A sentence needs at least a subject (noun/pronoun) and a verb to be complete.
Prepositions
A preposition shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another word in the sentence. Common categories include time, place, and movement.
- Time: at, on, in, before, after, during — The meeting is at 3 PM.
- Place: in, on, at, under, between, behind — The cat is under the table.
- Movement: to, into, onto, towards, through, across — She walked into the room.
Conjunctions
A conjunction connects words, phrases, or clauses. There are two main types.
Coordinating Conjunctions
- Join equal elements: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so (FANBOYS) — I like tea, but she prefers coffee.
Subordinating Conjunctions
- Join a dependent clause to an independent clause: because, although, since, unless, while, if, when — I stayed home because it was raining.
Interjections
An interjection is a word or phrase that expresses strong emotion or surprise. It is often followed by an exclamation point.
- Wow! That's amazing.
- Ouch! I stubbed my toe.
- Hey! Wait for me.
- Oh no! I forgot my keys.
