Understanding the IELTS Speaking Test

The IELTS speaking test has three parts and takes 11-14 minutes. Part 1: Introduction and questions about familiar topics (4-5 minutes). Part 2: A cue card with a topic to speak about for 2 minutes. Part 3: A discussion with the examiner about abstract ideas (4-5 minutes).

Part 1 Tips

Answer questions directly and then add details. Don't give one-word answers. Example: Q: Do you like music? A: Yes, I love music. I listen to it every day while working and I enjoy a variety of genres, especially jazz and classical.

Part 2 Tips

You have 1 minute to prepare. Use it to write key points. Speak for the full 2 minutes. Structure your answer: introduction, main points, and conclusion. Use the cue card questions as a guide.

Part 3 Tips

This part tests your ability to discuss abstract ideas. Give your opinion and support it with reasons and examples. Use phrases like: In my opinion, I believe that, From my perspective.

Fluency and Coherence

Speak continuously without long pauses. Use linking words: however, moreover, in addition, on the other hand, as a result. Organize your thoughts before speaking.

Lexical Resource (Vocabulary)

Use a range of vocabulary. Don't repeat the same words. Use synonyms and idiomatic language naturally. Learn topic-specific vocabulary for common IELTS topics like education, technology, and environment.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Use different sentence structures: simple, compound, and complex sentences. Use various tenses correctly. Avoid common grammar mistakes. Practice conditional sentences and relative clauses.

Pronunciation

Speak clearly and at a natural pace. Use word stress and sentence stress. Practice the th sound, word endings, and intonation. Your accent does not need to be perfect, but you must be understood.

Education, Technology, Environment, Health, Travel, Family, Work, Hobbies, Society, Culture. Practice speaking about each topic for 2 minutes without stopping.
